Creating A Family History Has Practical Uses Too

Anyone who tells you creating a family history is an easy undertaking is fibbing. Unless the intent is to only go back a generation or two, there will be some work in research involved and even some frustrations.

Should you want to go back in time as far as possible, tracing your family tree as you go, the labor can be intensive. Learning the ropes of genealogical research and gleaning solid information about ancestors isn’t always a walk in the park.

But, the information you find and the pictures of the past you’ll be able to draw are worth every bit of the effort. Not only are you creating an incredible gift to your family by tracing their past, you’re also producing a great tool with some very practical, and even life saving purposes.

Depending on your roots, some of the benefits of having a solid ancestral review can vary, but here are some of the major reasons to create a history beyond personal curiosity:

1 - Medical/genetic history – The importance of knowing medical history and where ancestors came from and when is becoming more and more clear. When a family history includes such things as major illnesses, genetic defects and other concerns, the documents becomes a treasure that just might one day save a life.
2 - Scholarships, grants and so on – Depending on where you can trace your roots, you might find a world of opportunity opening up for you or your descendants. Native American scholarships, for example, can suddenly become a possibility if a solid family history is found and recorded.
3 - Memberships – A lot of societies are open only to those who can trace their family history to a certain time and place. By researching your history, these organizations might open up. While exclusive, these organizations offer benefits to members that can include scholarships and so on for descendants.

Creating a family history is a fun and rewarding project. The more dirt you turn on the past, the more possible it is you’ll find some very valuable information that may someday come in handy for you or a future descendant.
